Under general supervision, performs advanced mechanical/electrical computer diagnostic and repair work on gasoline and diesel driven automotive and other related equipment. Also responsible for routine, advanced and preventative maintenance on district vehicles.

  The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. 

  • Inspects, diagnoses, locates, and repairs mechanical /electrical  difficulties on District automobiles, trucks, maintenance, and construction equipment. 
  • Determines extent of necessary repairs. 
  • Overhauls, repairs, and adjusts gas and diesel engines, transmission, differentials, and clutches. 
  • Tunes up gas and diesel engines, replaces ignition parts, fuel injectors, filters, and pumps; cleans and adjusts carburetors and valves. 
  • Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment. 
  • Repairs and replaces such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches; repairs a variety of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic small tools. 
  • Installs and maintains special equipment on District vehicles. 
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical, hydraulic, and air brake systems on heavy equipment. 
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and replaces computerized parts or computers on automotive and electrical equipment; uses computer scan tool to diagnose problems with District vehicles. 
  • Repairs and modifies District construction equipment as needed, including repairing cracks, reinforcing, and repairing hard facing. 
  • Advises supervisor of the need to meet major expenses for tool equipment, supplies, and materials purchases necessary for the efficient and productive operation of the department. 
  • Advises supervisor of workload inconsistencies, time schedule deficiencies, and work overloading to ensure that the work objectives of the department are fulfilled according to a predetermined plan. 
  • Performs CHP inspections; certifies equipment safety and ensures that the District’s maintenance program meets all CHP requirements; maintains inspection records. 
  • Prepares reports upon request; maintains work, time, and materials records. 
  • Provides supervision in the machine shop in the supervisor’s absence; provides direction to a Mechanic Helper or other assistant; gives technical advice and assistance to coworkers and supervisors. 
  • Keeps abreast of advances and trends in vehicle and equipment repair. 
  • Performs related duties as required. 

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties. 

Knowledge of: 

Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of automotive and related power driven equipment. 

The installation and construction of irrigation and drainage control and regulatory structures. 

Principles and practices of vehicle, equipment, and mechanical repair. 

Typical mechanical shop tools and equipment. 

Operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair of vehicles and equipment. 

Diagnostic flow charts and wiring schematics. 

Engine performance, engine management, diesel engine management, brake systems and HVAC systems. 

Safe work practices. 

Ability to: 

Inspect, diagnose and repair gas and diesel power driven equipment to locate difficulties and estimate cost and time to repair. 

Perform minor and major mechanical repair on District owned vehicles, including Duramax diesels. 

Perform work in a safe, calculated, and accurate manner. 

Read and interpret engineering design and construction plans and specifications. 

Work independently. 

Perform heavy manual work in lifting and moving heavy objects. 

Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill. 

Maintain a variety of shop and repair records. 

Understand and carry out oral and written directions. 

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Environment:  Work is performed in a shop environment with some travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; incumbents may be required to work evenings, weekends, or unusual shifts. 

Physical:  Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb ladders, stairs, ramps, canals, and ditches; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. 

Vision:  See in the normal visual range with or without correction. 

Hearing:  Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Compensation details: 38.04-46.24 Hourly Wage
