Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

The primary role of the Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge them as needed.
• Record maintenance data and decontaminate equipment.
• Update patient information and collect specimens according to established procedures.
• Clearly explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods, such as urine or fecal, when required.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand and follow physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper storage and labeling.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department training.
• Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to satisfy queries.

Essential Skills

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
• Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 1-2 years of experience in phlebotomy required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with pediatric patients required.
• Proficient in blood draw, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
• Customer service experience.
• Data entry skills.
• Ability to draw blood using butterfly needles.

Work Environment

The position is a first shift role, Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm, and every other Saturday from 7:30 am to 11:30 am. Hours will vary within these times. The work environment includes patient service centers and doctors' offices throughout the DC Metro Area. The candidate will be expected to perform at least 35 draws daily and may work alone or with a team, depending on the location. The role requires standing for 4 to 6 hours, and the candidate will work with patients of all ages. Typically, two weeks of training is provided at the start of the role.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr.
