Job Overview

Democracy Docket is seeking a

Key Responsibilities

  • Substantively track lawsuits related to the Trump administration's actions, voting rights and redistricting.
  • Provide real-time updates to staff on developments in litigation concerning the Trump administration and elections.
  • Develop content across Democracy Docket platforms, including our website, newsletters and social media accounts.
  • Conduct and draft research memos for Democracy Docket reporters.
  • Write copy for case pages and update in real-time to provide accurate, easy-to-understand information to our audience.
  • Compile and analyze data involving litigation trends.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Legal Editor to identify litigation trends and research opportunities.
  • Edit social media posts and news updates, as necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • J.D. is a plus, but not required
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Solid understanding of executive power, voting rights, and redistricting in the courts.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask.
  • Ability to translate research into ideas for website and social media content
  • Ability to stay organized and on top of multiple projects and large collection of documents
  • At least 3 years of full-time experience providing research or analysis on litigation and/or legislation
  • Familiarity with federal and/or state court system (i.e experience with PACER, LexisNexis, Westlaw)
  • Familiarity with data collection, managing a database and/or data analysis (i.e excel, google sheets, airtable)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with editors and reporters

Must Haves

  • Enthusiastic about the courts and democracy
  • Understanding the need to work off hours, some weekends depending on the courts

Work Environment

This is a full-time role based out of our Washington, D.C. or Jersey City office. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
